Before You Begin

How This Works
Chabad custom: say everything up to Hamapil fully dressed, sitting or standing. Then get into bed and say Hamapil last, lying down, immediately before sleep.
After Hamapil, do not speak, eat or drink. Go to sleep. If you must speak afterward, say the first paragraph of Shema again before sleeping.

Ribono Shel Olam is omitted on Shabbat and Yom Tov. Everything else is said every night.

Chabad says all three paragraphs of the Shema here, not only the first, which is where many communities differ.
KavanahThe Rebbe Rashab called the bedtime Shema a small-scale version of the confession a person says before the soul leaves - with one difference. At the end of life you are leaving the fair. Here you are still in the middle of it, and can still fix what you are reviewing.

Take thirty seconds before you begin and actually run the day back. That accounting is the prayer; the words are the frame around it.

Forgiveness

Ribono Shel Olam
Omitted on Shabbat and Yom Tov. Say it before anything else.
KavanahYou forgive everyone before you ask to be forgiven. The order is not decorative - the Talmud says God forgives the one who lets things go.

The hardest line is let no one be punished on my account. You are asking that whoever wronged you today face no consequence for it. Say it even on a night when you do not mean it yet. Meaning it is the work of years.
רִבּוֹנוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם, הֲרֵינִי מוֹחֵל לְכָל מִי שֶׁהִכְעִיס וְהִקְנִיט אוֹתִי,
Ribono shel olam, hareini mochel l'chol mi shehich'is v'hiknit oti,
Master of the universe, I hereby forgive anyone who has angered or provoked me,
אוֹ שֶׁחָטָא כְּנֶגְדִּי, בֵּין בְּגוּפִי, בֵּין בְּמָמוֹנִי, בֵּין בִּכְבוֹדִי, בֵּין בְּכָל אֲשֶׁר לִי,

bein b'gilgul zeh bein b'gilgul acher, l'chol bar Yisrael,
whether in this incarnation or another - to every Jew,
וְלֹא יֵעָנֵשׁ שׁוּם אָדָם בְּסִבָּתִי.
v'lo ye'anesh shum adam b'sibati.
and let no one be punished on my account.
יְהִי רָצוֹן מִלְּפָנֶיךָ יְיָ אֱלֹהַי וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתַי,
Yehi ratzon milfaneicha Adonai elohai velohei avotai,
May it be Your will, Lord my God and God of my fathers,
שֶׁלֹּא אֶחֱטָא עוֹד, וְלֹא אֶחֱזוֹר בָּהֶם,
sheló echeta od, v'lo echezor bahem,
that I sin no more, nor return to them,

nor again anger You, nor do what is evil in Your eyes.
וּמַה שֶּׁחָטָאתִי לְפָנֶיךָ, מְחוֹק בְּרַחֲמֶיךָ הָרַבִּים,
Uma shechatati l'faneicha, m'chok b'rachameicha harabim,
And what I have sinned before You, erase in Your great mercy,
אֲבָל לֹא עַל יְדֵי יִסּוּרִים וָחֳלָיִם רָעִים.
aval lo al y'dei yisurim vacholayim ra'im.
but not through suffering or illness.
יִהְיוּ לְרָצוֹן אִמְרֵי פִי וְהֶגְיוֹן לִבִּי לְפָנֶיךָ, יְיָ צוּרִי וְגוֹאֲלִי.
Yihyu l'ratzon imrei fi v'hegyon libi l'faneicha, Adonai tzuri v'go'ali.
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before You, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Shema

The Shema
Cover your eyes with your right hand for the first verse. Say Baruch shem in an undertone. Chabad says all three paragraphs.
KavanahYou said this same Shema this morning. The Rebbe drew the distinction: the morning Shema accepts God's authority in potential - you are about to go out and live the day. The night Shema accepts it in practice, looking back at a day that already happened, with whatever you did and did not do in it.

Morning is a commitment. Night is a reckoning.

שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל, יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ, יְיָ אֶחָד.
Shema Yisrael, Adonai eloheinu, Adonai echad.
Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One.
בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם כְּבוֹד מַלְכוּתוֹ לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד.
Baruch shem k'vod malchuto l'olam va'ed.
Blessed be the name of the glory of His kingdom for ever and ever.
וְאָהַבְתָּ אֵת יְיָ אֱלֹהֶיךָ, בְּכָל לְבָבְךָ וּבְכָל נַפְשְׁךָ וּבְכָל מְאֹדֶךָ.
V'ahavta et Adonai elohecha, b'chol l'vavcha uv'chol nafsh'cha uv'chol m'odecha.
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.
וְהָיוּ הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם עַל לְבָבֶךָ.
V'hayu had'varim ha'eileh asher anochi m'tzav'cha hayom al l'vavecha.
And these words which I command you today shall be upon your heart.
וְשִׁנַּנְתָּם לְבָנֶיךָ וְדִבַּרְתָּ בָּם, בְּשִׁבְתְּךָ בְּבֵיתֶךָ וּבְלֶכְתְּךָ בַדֶּרֶךְ, וּבְשָׁכְבְּךָ וּבְקוּמֶךָ.
V'shinantam l'vanecha v'dibarta bam, b'shivt'cha b'veitecha uv'lecht'cha vaderech, uv'shochb'cha uv'kumecha.
You shall teach them thoroughly to your children, and speak of them when you sit at home and when you walk on the road, when you lie down and when you rise.
וּקְשַׁרְתָּם לְאוֹת עַל יָדֶךָ, וְהָיוּ לְטֹטָפֹת בֵּין עֵינֶיךָ.
Uk'shartam l'ot al yadecha, v'hayu l'totafot bein einecha.
You shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be a reminder between your eyes.
וּכְתַבְתָּם עַל מְזֻזוֹת בֵּיתֶךָ וּבִשְׁעָרֶיךָ.
Uch'tavtam al m'zuzot beitecha uvish'arecha.
And write them upon the doorposts of your house and upon your gates.
Second paragraph.
וְהָיָה אִם שָׁמֹעַ תִּשְׁמְעוּ אֶל מִצְוֺתַי אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוֶּה אֶתְכֶם הַיּוֹם, לְאַהֲבָה אֶת יְיָ אֱלֹהֵיכֶם וּלְעָבְדוֹ בְּכָל לְבַבְכֶם וּבְכָל נַפְשְׁכֶם.
V'haya im shamoa tishm'u el mitzvotai asher anochi m'tzaveh etchem hayom, l'ahava et Adonai eloheichem ul'ovdo b'chol l'vavchem uv'chol nafsh'chem.
And it will be, if you diligently obey My commandments which I command you today, to love the Lord your God and serve Him with all your heart and all your soul,
וְנָתַתִּי מְטַר אַרְצְכֶם בְּעִתּוֹ, יוֹרֶה וּמַלְקוֹשׁ, וְאָסַפְתָּ דְגָנֶךָ וְתִירֹשְׁךָ וְיִצְהָרֶךָ.
V'natati m'tar artz'chem b'ito, yoreh umalkosh, v'asafta d'ganecha v'tirosh'cha v'yitz'harecha.
I will give rain for your land in its season, the early and late rain, and you will gather your grain, wine and oil.
וְנָתַתִּי עֵשֶׂב בְּשָׂדְךָ לִבְהֶמְתֶּךָ, וְאָכַלְתָּ וְשָׂבָעְתָּ.
V'natati esev b'sadcha livhemtecha, v'achalta v'savata.
I will give grass in your field for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.
הִשָּׁמְרוּ לָכֶם פֶּן יִפְתֶּה לְבַבְכֶם, וְסַרְתֶּם וַעֲבַדְתֶּם אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתֶם לָהֶם.
Hisham'ru lachem pen yifteh l'vavchem, v'sartem va'avadtem elohim acheirim v'hishtachavitem lahem.
Take care lest your heart be lured away, and you turn astray and serve other gods and bow to them.
וְחָרָה אַף יְיָ בָּכֶם, וְעָצַר אֶת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְלֹא יִהְיֶה מָטָר, וְהָאֲדָמָה לֹא תִתֵּן אֶת יְבוּלָהּ, וַאֲבַדְתֶּם מְהֵרָה מֵעַל הָאָרֶץ הַטֹּבָה אֲשֶׁר יְיָ נֹתֵן לָכֶם.
V'chara af Adonai bachem, v'atzar et hashamayim v'lo yihyeh matar, v'ha'adama lo titen et y'vulah, va'avadtem m'heira me'al ha'aretz hatova asher Adonai noten lachem.
Then the Lord's anger will flare against you; He will close the heavens so there is no rain and the earth will not yield its produce, and you will swiftly perish from the good land the Lord gives you.
וְשַׂמְתֶּם אֶת דְּבָרַי אֵלֶּה עַל לְבַבְכֶם וְעַל נַפְשְׁכֶם, וּקְשַׁרְתֶּם אֹתָם לְאוֹת עַל יֶדְכֶם, וְהָיוּ לְטוֹטָפֹת בֵּין עֵינֵיכֶם.
V'samtem et d'varai eileh al l'vavchem v'al nafsh'chem, uk'shartem otam l'ot al yedchem, v'hayu l'totafot bein eineichem.
Place these words of Mine on your heart and on your soul, bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be a reminder between your eyes.
וְלִמַּדְתֶּם אֹתָם אֶת בְּנֵיכֶם לְדַבֵּר בָּם, בְּשִׁבְתְּךָ בְּבֵיתֶךָ וּבְלֶכְתְּךָ בַדֶּרֶךְ, וּבְשָׁכְבְּךָ וּבְקוּמֶךָ.
V'limadtem otam et b'neichem l'daber bam, b'shivt'cha b'veitecha uv'lecht'cha vaderech, uv'shochb'cha uv'kumecha.
Teach them to your children, to speak of them when you sit at home and when you walk on the road, when you lie down and when you rise.
וּכְתַבְתָּם עַל מְזוּזוֹת בֵּיתֶךָ וּבִשְׁעָרֶיךָ.
Uch'tavtam al m'zuzot beitecha uvish'arecha.
And inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,
לְמַעַן יִרְבּוּ יְמֵיכֶם וִימֵי בְנֵיכֶם עַל הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע יְיָ לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶם לָתֵת לָהֶם, כִּימֵי הַשָּׁמַיִם עַל הָאָרֶץ.
L'ma'an yirbu y'meichem vimei v'neichem al ha'adama asher nishba Adonai la'avoteichem latet lahem, kimei hashamayim al ha'aretz.
so that your days and the days of your children be many on the land the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven over the earth.
Third paragraph.
וַיֹּאמֶר יְיָ אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר: דַּבֵּר אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵהֶם, וְעָשׂוּ לָהֶם צִיצִת עַל כַּנְפֵי בִגְדֵיהֶם לְדֹרֹתָם, וְנָתְנוּ עַל צִיצִת הַכָּנָף פְּתִיל תְּכֵלֶת.
Vayomer Adonai el Moshe lemor: daber el b'nei Yisrael v'amarta aleihem, v'asu lahem tzitzit al kanfei vigdeihem l'dorotam, v'natnu al tzitzit hakanaf p'til t'chelet.
The Lord spoke to Moses: Speak to the children of Israel and tell them to make fringes on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to place a thread of blue on the fringe of each corner.
וְהָיָה לָכֶם לְצִיצִת, וּרְאִיתֶם אֹתוֹ וּזְכַרְתֶּם אֶת כָּל מִצְוֺת יְיָ וַעֲשִׂיתֶם אֹתָם, וְלֹא תָתוּרוּ אַחֲרֵי לְבַבְכֶם וְאַחֲרֵי עֵינֵיכֶם אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם זֹנִים אַחֲרֵיהֶם.
V'haya lachem l'tzitzit, ur'item oto uz'chartem et kol mitzvot Adonai va'asitem otam, v'lo taturu acharei l'vavchem v'acharei eineichem asher atem zonim achareihem.
They shall be tzitzit for you, and you shall look at them and remember all the Lord's commandments and do them, and not stray after your heart and after your eyes.
לְמַעַן תִּזְכְּרוּ וַעֲשִׂיתֶם אֶת כָּל מִצְוֺתָי, וִהְיִיתֶם קְדֹשִׁים לֵאלֹהֵיכֶם.
L'ma'an tizk'ru va'asitem et kol mitzvotai, vihyitem k'doshim leloheichem.
So that you remember and do all My commandments, and be holy to your God.
אֲנִי יְיָ אֱלֹהֵיכֶם אֲשֶׁר הוֹצֵאתִי אֶתְכֶם מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם לִהְיוֹת לָכֶם לֵאלֹהִים, אֲנִי יְיָ אֱלֹהֵיכֶם. אֱמֶת.
Ani Adonai eloheichem asher hotzeiti etchem me'eretz Mitzrayim lihyot lachem lelohim, ani Adonai eloheichem. Emet.
I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. I am the Lord your God. True.
Chabad custom is to repeat Ani Adonai eloheichem and then say emet, so the count of words comes out right.

Protection

Yoshev B'Seter - Psalm 91
The psalm the Talmud calls the song against harm. Said after the Shema.
KavanahRead it as a conversation that changes speaker. It opens describing a person who shelters in God, shifts to God speaking about him, and closes with God speaking to him: I am with him in trouble.

Not I will remove the trouble. With him, in it.
יֹשֵׁב בְּסֵתֶר עֶלְיוֹן, בְּצֵל שַׁדַּי יִתְלוֹנָן.
Yoshev b'seter elyon, b'tzel Shadai yitlonan.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High abides in the shadow of the Almighty.
אֹמַר לַיְיָ מַחְסִי וּמְצוּדָתִי, אֱלֹהַי אֶבְטַח בּוֹ.
Omar LaShem machsi um'tzudati, elohai evtach bo.
I say of the Lord: my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.
כִּי הוּא יַצִּילְךָ מִפַּח יָקוּשׁ, מִדֶּבֶר הַוּוֹת.
Ki hu yatzilcha mipach yakush, midever havot.
For He will save you from the fowler's snare, from devastating plague.
בְּאֶבְרָתוֹ יָסֶךְ לָךְ וְתַחַת כְּנָפָיו תֶּחְסֶה, צִנָּה וְסֹחֵרָה אֲמִתּוֹ.
B'evrato yasech lach v'tachat k'nafav techseh, tzina v'socheira amito.
He will cover you with His pinions, and beneath His wings you will find refuge; His truth is a shield and armor.
לֹא תִירָא מִפַּחַד לָיְלָה, מֵחֵץ יָעוּף יוֹמָם.
Lo tira mipachad laila, mechetz ya'uf yomam.
You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day.
מִדֶּבֶר בָּאֹפֶל יַהֲלֹךְ, מִקֶּטֶב יָשׁוּד צָהֳרָיִם.
Midever ba'ofel yahaloch, miketev yashud tzohorayim.
Nor the plague that walks in darkness, nor the destruction that lays waste at noon.
יִפֹּל מִצִּדְּךָ אֶלֶף וּרְבָבָה מִימִינֶךָ, אֵלֶיךָ לֹא יִגָּשׁ.
Yipol mitzid'cha elef ur'vava miminecha, eilecha lo yigash.
A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand; it will not reach you.
רַק בְּעֵינֶיךָ תַבִּיט, וְשִׁלֻּמַת רְשָׁעִים תִּרְאֶה.
Rak b'einecha tabit, v'shilumat r'sha'im tir'eh.
You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked.
כִּי אַתָּה יְיָ מַחְסִי, עֶלְיוֹן שַׂמְתָּ מְעוֹנֶךָ.
Ki atah Adonai machsi, elyon samta m'onecha.
Because you have made the Lord your refuge, the Most High your dwelling.
לֹא תְאֻנֶּה אֵלֶיךָ רָעָה, וְנֶגַע לֹא יִקְרַב בְּאָהֳלֶךָ.
Lo t'uneh eilecha ra'a, v'nega lo yikrav b'aholecha.
No evil will befall you, no plague will come near your tent.
כִּי מַלְאָכָיו יְצַוֶּה לָּךְ, לִשְׁמָרְךָ בְּכָל דְּרָכֶיךָ.
Ki mal'achav y'tzaveh lach, lishmorcha b'chol d'rachecha.
For He will command His angels for you, to guard you in all your ways.
עַל כַּפַּיִם יִשָּׂאוּנְךָ, פֶּן תִּגֹּף בָּאֶבֶן רַגְלֶךָ.
Al kapayim yisa'uncha, pen tigof ba'even raglecha.
They will carry you on their hands, lest your foot strike a stone.
עַל שַׁחַל וָפֶתֶן תִּדְרֹךְ, תִּרְמֹס כְּפִיר וְתַנִּין.
Al shachal vafeten tidroch, tirmos k'fir v'tanin.
You will tread on lion and viper, trample young lion and serpent.

Ki vi chashak va'afal'teihu, asagveihu ki yada sh'mi.
Because he desired Me, I will deliver him; I will raise him up because he knows My name.
יִקְרָאֵנִי וְאֶעֱנֵהוּ, עִמּוֹ אָנֹכִי בְצָרָה, אֲחַלְּצֵהוּ וַאֲכַבְּדֵהוּ.
Yikra'eni v'e'eneihu, imo anochi v'tzara, achal'tzeihu va'achab'deihu.
He will call Me and I will answer him; I am with him in distress; I will free him and honor him.
אֹרֶךְ יָמִים אַשְׂבִּיעֵהוּ, וְאַרְאֵהוּ בִּישׁוּעָתִי.
Orech yamim asbi'eihu, v'ar'eihu bishu'ati.
With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.
Psalm 3
Said after Psalm 91.
David wrote it while running from his own son. It is in the bedtime seder because of the line I lie down and sleep; I wake, because the Lord supports me.
מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד, בְּבָרְחוֹ מִפְּנֵי אַבְשָׁלוֹם בְּנוֹ.
Mizmor l'David, b'vorcho mip'nei Avshalom b'no.
A psalm of David, when he fled from his son Avshalom.
יְיָ מָה רַבּוּ צָרָי, רַבִּים קָמִים עָלָי.
Adonai ma rabu tzarai, rabim kamim alai.
Lord, how many are my enemies; many rise against me.
רַבִּים אֹמְרִים לְנַפְשִׁי, אֵין יְשׁוּעָתָה לּוֹ בֵאלֹהִים סֶלָה.
Rabim omrim l'nafshi, ein y'shu'ata lo velohim sela.
Many say of my soul: there is no help for him in God. Selah.
וְאַתָּה יְיָ מָגֵן בַּעֲדִי, כְּבוֹדִי וּמֵרִים רֹאשִׁי.
V'atah Adonai magen ba'adi, k'vodi umerim roshi.
But You, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head.
קוֹלִי אֶל יְיָ אֶקְרָא, וַיַּעֲנֵנִי מֵהַר קָדְשׁוֹ סֶלָה.
Koli el Adonai ekra, vaya'aneini mehar kodsho sela.
I call out to the Lord, and He answers me from His holy mountain. Selah.
אֲנִי שָׁכַבְתִּי וָאִישָׁנָה, הֱקִיצוֹתִי כִּי יְיָ יִסְמְכֵנִי.
Ani shachavti va'ishana, hekitzoti ki Adonai yism'cheini.
I lie down and sleep; I wake, because the Lord supports me.
לֹא אִירָא מֵרִבְבוֹת עָם, אֲשֶׁר סָבִיב שָׁתוּ עָלָי.
Lo ira merivvot am, asher saviv shatu alai.
I will not fear the tens of thousands set against me all around.
קוּמָה יְיָ הוֹשִׁיעֵנִי אֱלֹהַי, כִּי הִכִּיתָ אֶת כָּל אֹיְבַי לֶחִי, שִׁנֵּי רְשָׁעִים שִׁבַּרְתָּ.
Kuma Adonai hoshi'eini elohai, ki hikita et kol oy'vai lechi, shinei r'sha'im shibarta.
Rise, Lord; save me, my God. For You have struck all my enemies on the cheek; You have broken the teeth of the wicked.
לַיְיָ הַיְשׁוּעָה, עַל עַמְּךָ בִרְכָתֶךָ סֶּלָה.
LaShem hay'shu'a, al amcha virchatecha sela.
Salvation belongs to the Lord; Your blessing is on Your people. Selah.
Hashkiveinu
Said after the Shema and Psalm 91.
On Shabbat and Yom Tov, stop after ufros aleinu sukat sh'lomecha and skip the rest of the paragraph - the requests for protection from enemy, sword and famine are weekday requests.

Note this version has no closing blessing. The Hashkiveinu in Arvit ends shomer amo Yisrael la'ad; here it simply ends, because at bedtime it is not one of the blessings of the Shema.
KavanahThe one prayer in the siddur that asks God to handle the hours when you are not conscious to ask for anything.

Ufros aleinu sukat sh'lomecha - spread over us the shelter of Your peace. A sukkah, not a fortress. Something temporary, with gaps, that you sit inside anyway.
הַשְׁכִּיבֵנוּ יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ לְשָׁלוֹם, וְהַעֲמִידֵנוּ מַלְכֵּנוּ לְחַיִּים טוֹבִים וּלְשָׁלוֹם.
Hashkiveinu Adonai eloheinu l'shalom, v'ha'amideinu malkeinu l'chayim tovim ul'shalom.
Lay us down, Lord our God, in peace, and raise us up, our King, to good life and peace.
on Shabbat and Yom Tov, stop here
וְתַקְּנֵנוּ בְּעֵצָה טוֹבָה מִלְּפָנֶיךָ, וְהוֹשִׁיעֵנוּ מְהֵרָה לְמַעַן שְׁמֶךָ, וּפְרוֹשׂ עָלֵינוּ סֻכַּת שְׁלוֹמֶךָ.
V'takneinu b'eitza tova milfaneicha, v'hoshi'einu m'heira l'ma'an sh'mecha, ufros aleinu sukat sh'lomecha.

Seven lines. Said quietly.
Each line's initials spell part of a 42-letter Name. Say the last line, Baruch shem, in an undertone.

Ana b'choach g'dulat y'mincha tatir tz'rura.
Please, with the strength of Your great right hand, release the bound.

What Is Still Missing
Two pieces of the full Chabad seder are not on this page: Lamnatzeiach (Psalm 67) and the Viduy. Say those from Tehillat Hashem if you want the complete version.
Both are omitted on Shabbat and Yom Tov, along with Ribono Shel Olam. Everything that is on this page is complete and in the right order.

In Bed

Hamapil
Get into bed first. Say this lying down, immediately before sleep. Do not speak, eat or drink afterward.
If you said the rest earlier and time has passed, repeat the first paragraph of Shema before saying this. If you must speak after Hamapil, say the first paragraph of Shema again before sleeping.

Some are careful not to say Hamapil with God's name after midnight; if you go to bed that late, ask your rav what to do.
KavanahYou are about to lose consciousness and hand yourself over. The blessing does not ask to stay awake - it thanks God for sleep and then asks for it to be good.

The last line is not about sleep at all: who illuminates the whole world with His glory. You close the day by saying the light is still on, whether or not you are awake to see it.

Chassidim have a practice: after Hamapil, no more words - think a line of Torah until you fall asleep.
